MainStage has three modes. You can toggle between them by pressing one of the buttons in the top left of the MainStage window, choosing one in the View menu, or using the corresponding keyboard shortcut.
Layout
Layout mode is for designing your performance screen. You can add, edit, and remove screen controls and edit their MIDI assignments.
Edit
Edit mode is for programming the content of your concert, such as adding sets, patches, and channel strips.
Perform
Always perform in perform mode. It hides the editing panels and runs more efficiently. You can use perform mode either in full screen (the default) or in the window.
