# What is MIDI panic?

Despite its somewhat ominous name, **Panic** is an extremely useful function that immediately silences all notes, including any hanging MIDI notes (notes that don't stop playing even after you've released the key). There are several ways to Panic:

* Press `Control-P`
* Double-click the MIDI Monitor in the toolbar.

By default, we also [assigned the Panic screen control](/basics/assigning-screen-controls) to the top key on your keyboard.
