# Should I use mono or stereo output from MainStage?

[Stereo audio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereophonic_sound) is always preferable because it offers a greater sense of space and direction, and it more accurately represents what we hear naturally with our ears. When the left and right audio channels are combined to mono, the flattened audio loses this natural sense of aural depth.

If you are unable to use stereo, it is better to combine the audio channels rather than to only use the left or right channel individually. Our programming is already prepared for this scenario. Simply turn on the "Gain" plugin on the Output 1-2 channel strip and the output will be "summed" to mono.
